The New York World’s Fair, at Flushing Meadows in Queens New York City, was an international display of activities, performances, films, art, and food with 62 countries, 35 US Territories and 1,400 organizations and companies participating in a collection of culture. Over 45 million people attended the exhibition that spanned 1,202 acres across seven color coded zones. The exhibition was announced in September 1935 with the slogan “Dawn of a New Day” after “The World of Tomorrow”. The Fair opened on April 20th, 1939 which marked the 150th anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration into office. However with World War II on the rise, four months into the exhibition, many exhibits were terminated and the World’s Fair only recouped 32% of its original cost.
This poster depicts a trylon and the perisphere which acted as the symbols for the New York World’s Fair. The centerpiece of the trylon and perisphere were designed by Wallace Harrison and Max Abramovitz. The zones of the World’s Fair were then maped around these structures.
