This artwork is from Les Maitres de L'Affiche series; miniature versions of outstanding stone lithograph artworks of the most important advertising posters by the finest artists.
“The Don Quixote, perhaps the finest of all the Beggarstaffs' (the purely invented name, used by the brothers-in-law William Nicholson and James Pryde) was the stage production 'A Chapter from Don Quixote' at the Lyceum Theatre 1895 with Henry Irving in the title role. Beggarstaffs' design shows the figure of Don Quixote seated in profile on a white horse. The economy of means in this astonishing work is nowhere more evident than Don Quixote's horse. Our ability to read this silhoutte depends on the presence of the dark windmill against which he did battle to be giants”
