About La Belle Epoque

La Belle Epoque History

La Belle Epoque is one of the original ” Painted Ladies” of Napa historic fame. For over a century, this stunning Napa Valley Queen Anne has been a Victorian beauty in Napa. La Belle Epoque is a luxury Napa Bed and Breakfast Inn surrounded by beautiful gardens. The main house offers six rooms, and an additional four suites are in the Buckley House across the street.

The elegant La Belle Epoque was designed and built in 1893, a wonderful example of Napa’s most noted architect, Luther M. Turton who designed many of the buildings in Napa between 1876 and 1925. In 1871, Herman Shwarz and his new wife, Elizabeth “Lizzie”, opened a hardware store that by 1906 was the largest of its kind in the North Bay Area serving Napa, Sonoma, and Solano counties. The house was built by Herman Schwarz, a successful hardware merchant and community leader.

Herman and Elizabeth Shwarz’s daughter, Minnie, received the Queen Anne house with ornate stained glass windows as a wedding gift from her parents. Throughout the home, your eyes will feast on some of the most beautiful stained glass windows from that period in history. The light pouring through them during the day bathes the room in their gorgeous light. The home stands today on the corner of Seminary and Calistoga Avenues and has been known as La Belle Epoque since 1981.
