Milton Glaser’s celebrated image of the American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was orginally commissioned by John Berg, then art director at Columbia/CBS Records, to generate publicity for the forthcoming album Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits. It was designed to be packaged with the album. Taking Marcel Duchamp’s cut-paper Self Portrait in Profile (1957) as his insppiration, Glaser portrayed pop icon in dramatic silhoutte, transforming Dylan’s luxuriant hair into decorative swirls of kaleidoscopic color. Glaser was interested in Art Nouveau at the time, acknowledging its influence on the colors and shapes in the design. He also invented an unusual typeface for the single word ‘Dylan’. Although this was an early poster in hir oeuvre (he has designed over 400 in his illustrious career), it became one of the most widely circulated of all time, with more than six million distributed with the popular album.
